In an ideal world, everyone is equal and has equal rights to live, work whereever they want and fall in love and marry with whomever they want. An ideal world is safe, just, fair and equal for all. However, LGBTQIA+ people around the world still face discrimination, and sometimes even violence. These challenges are deeply linked to inequality.
Worldwide, the LGBTQIA+ community is more likely to experience discrimination and violence. It impacts their daily lives. This results in limited access to resources, lack of economic opportunities, deprivation of civil rights entitlement and so much more. Queer people of color, queer people with disabilities, non-binary and transgender people in particular, experience even more discrimination and inequality.
The inequality that the LGBTQIA+ community faces makes it harder for them to raise their voice and claim their rights. In 71 countries, homosexuality is still in the criminal code, even today. LGBTQIA+ activists are being silenced, arrested, and imprisoned in many places.
Oxfam Novib stands in solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community, particularly those from marginalised groups. Working with queer activists, integrate a Sexual Orientation Gender Identity and Expression perspective in their work, and implement programmes to amplify LGBTQIA+ voices, increase their visibility, and support them in creating systemic change.
In the Netherlands Oxfam Novib are organising series of events in collaboration with local Dutch queer initiatives to deepen our conversation with LGBTQIA+ activists and the community around the world. At Milkshake you can visit their exhibition ‘Voices in the Closet’, where you can listen to stories of various queer activists from all over the world.
As part of the community or ally, the Dutch public can show their support and solidarity by sending a personal message through the Oxfam Novib PrideBot. And we invite you to join in the Pride Walk Amsterdam to ask for more public attention to the struggles and achievements of LGBTQIA+ community worldwide.
